Practically all American homes have custom designed free standing coat racks that adorn foyers, a practice from the past that survived the onslaught of modern living. In fact, the development was not confined to homes; instead, it became the standard office reception furniture. Although traditional treatment of foyers involves wood racks, finding one made of metal and plastic is no longer news in this modern day and age.

History of Coat Racks

Its beginning could be traced to the necessity of having to wear coats to ward-off rain and snow and protection from the extreme weather, particularly during the winter season. Much like umbrellas, coats could not be expected to be inside the home or receiving quarters. Most are left on the foyer, so dripping water from the rain or maybe melted snow will not create a mess that will be hard to clean. Out of this situation, the foyer has to have hooks, where coats and umbrellas can hang, drip, and dry.

Why do free standing coat racks continue to exist? As in the past until now, Americans leave homes on coats as means of protection against the chilly weather. And when we enter foyers, coats are left in the reception area that can easily be retrieved as one leaves. The practice of leaving coats in the foyer was left to us by our forefathers, delegating racks as a primary home and office reception furniture at the anteroom prior to entering the main visitors receiving area.
